“The Breck Epic is a roller coaster of a stage race. Over the 6 days you
climb and descend countless mountains, you have good days and bad days.
You have good moments and very dark moments. In the end it’s all about
minimizing the bad. During the first 4 stages I did a good job minimizing
the bad (9 stitches in my knee) and was sitting in 2nd place and held a 15
minute lead over 3rd going into Stage 5 (Wheeler Pass).
During stage 5 I fell apart trying to hike as fast as the 3rd place racer up Wheeler. At the
end of the stage I lost over 14 minutes to him that day. My lead going into
the final stage was down to 28 seconds.
I needed to bounce back. The last stage was a staggered start. Waves of 10 racers went off every minute. 3rd
place SS went off 2 minutes before me. I knew I had to chase him down,
catch him, then follow him to the finish line.
I worked my way though geared and SS racers until I caught up to my target 20 miles into the race.
Mission accomplished, I followed him and a couple other SS’ers who started
ahead of me into the finish line and got the stage win and solidified 2nd
place in the GC.
To race your bike for 22 hours, 46 minutes and 50 seconds
over 6 days takes a toll on you both mentally and physically. I’m glad it’s
over, but stoked I did so well.” Dahn Pahrs
